Sustainability Policy

As a travel company that engages with consumers, tour guides, travel agencies, hotels, transport companies, restaurants, and attractions, we recognize our key role in shaping sustainable tourism. We are committed to implementing and promoting best sustainability practices, maximizing positive impacts, minimizing negative ones, and encouraging our clients and partners to do the same.
1. Sustainability Management & Legal Compliance
Sustainability Management
We commit to sustainability management through the following actions:
- Appoint a dedicated employee responsible for sustainability coordination.
- Maintain a sustainability mission statement communicated to customers, partners, and suppliers.
- Adopt an accessible, written sustainability policy that targets a reduction of negative social, cultural, economic, and environmental impacts, including employee health and safety.
- Conduct a baseline assessment of the company’s sustainability performance.
- Develop a sustainability action plan with realistic targets, clear actions, assigned responsibilities, and a timeline.
- Establish documented procedures to monitor and evaluate the implementation of the sustainability policy, objectives, and targets.
- Ensure transparency through public reporting and communication.
- Ensure all employees are fully aware of our Sustainability Policy and are committed to implementing and improving it.
- Prioritise working with companies that hold our core social and environmental values and are certified by third-party organisations such as Travelife or B Corporation.
Legal Compliance
We commit to complying with all national legislation, regulations, and codes of practice.
2. Internal Management: Social Policy & Human Rights
Social Policy
We commit to sustainable internal management through a clear, written, and well-communicated social policy that includes the following principles:
- Grant employee’s freedom of employment and contract termination with adequate notice (ideally minimum one month) and without penalty.
- Include labor conditions consistent with national labor law, and a job description in every employment contract.
- State the wage rate in the contract; wages must meet or exceed the national legal minimum.
- Provide all relevant insurance as required by national law.
- Grant employees fixed paid annual leave and unpaid leave allowance.
- Maintain a health and safety policy compliant with national legal standards.
- Ensure first aid kits and trained staff are available at all relevant locations.
- Comply with national law on the minimum age for admission to employment.
Human Rights
We commit to practicing human rights by enforcing the following:
- Prohibit discrimination in recruitment, employment conditions, training, or promotion on the basis of gender, race, age, disability, ethnicity, religion, beliefs, or sexual orientation.
- Build a company culture of reduced inequalities — ensuring fair opportunities, inclusive decision-making, and equal access to career progression for all employees.
3. Internal Management: Environment & Community Relations
We commit to environmental protection, climate action, and enhanced community relations through the following practices:
- Actively reduce the use of disposable and single-use goods.
- Set printers and copiers to double-sided printing by default.
- Switch off lights and equipment when not in use; enable energy-saving modes on all applicable devices.
- Comply with national legislation concerning waste disposal and wastewater treatment.
- Reduce printed brochures and distribute e-versions instead.
4. Transport
We are committed to reducing transport-related pollution and selecting the most sustainable options for our tours. We commit to this by:
- Selecting the most sustainable transport options to the destination, considering price and comfort.
- Giving preference to sustainable transport alternatives for transfers and excursions, balancing cost, comfort, and practicality.
Driver Standards
All drivers transporting tourists must adhere to the following rules:
- Drive safely and maintain full control of the vehicle at all times.
- Never use a mobile phone while driving, except via hands-free in an emergency. In emergencies, seek passengers’ permission before pulling over.
- Always observe legal speed limits as set by the DMV.
- No smoking in the vehicle or in proximity to tourists at any time.
- Maintain a safe following distance from vehicles ahead.
- Comply with all applicable DMV road rules.
Eco-Driving Practices
- Drive at designated speed limits and use low gears to reduce carbon emissions.
- Use the engine consciously — release the accelerator in advance of stops.
- Plan routes before departure to avoid traffic and getting lost.
- Adopt a relaxed, defensive driving style; anticipate stops (e.g., traffic jams, red lights).
- Switch off the engine when expecting a prolonged wait; avoid idling.
- Check tire pressure before every departure.
- Use heating and air conditioning only when necessary.
Communication with Tourists
- Speak with tourists in a respectful and professional tone at all times.
- Physical contact with customers is prohibited except for a handshake if initiated by the traveller at the end of the trip.
- Clearly explain the driver’s role during the tour, especially when no guide is present.
5. Accommodations
We aim to build a fully sustainable tourism supply chain. Accommodation providers play a critical role in achieving this goal. We commit to:
- Selecting accommodation providers with demonstrated sustainability practices and quality standards, with preference for internationally certified properties.
- Preferring locally owned and managed properties that offer locally sourced products.
- Prioritizing accommodations that hire local community members and source food and beverages locally.
- Encouraging accommodation providers to follow responsible tourism best practices and training.
- Sharing our sustainability objectives and selection requirements with all contracted and prospective providers.
- Prioritizing accommodations that limit their negative impact on local and global biodiversity.
- Terminating cooperation with any accommodation that jeopardizes the provision or integrity of basic services — such as food, water, energy, healthcare, or soil — to neighboring communities.
6. Excursions & Activities
We place the highest value on animal welfare and community well-being. We are firmly against harming wildlife or polluting the environment. We commit to:
- Advising guests on behavior standards focused on respecting local culture, nature, wildlife, and the environment.
- Not offering excursions in which wildlife is held captive, except for properly regulated activities compliant with local, national, and international law.
- Not engaging with companies that harvest, consume, display, sell, or trade wildlife species unless the activity is regulated, sustainable, and compliant with applicable law.
- Providing travelers with relevant guidance to minimize damage to marine ecosystems.
- Employing skilled and certified guides at culturally sensitive, heritage, and ecologically sensitive sites.
- Promoting excursions that directly involve and support local communities through service purchases, traditional crafts, local food production, and social project visits.
- Advising guests on excursions and activities that support local biodiversity, such as visiting protected areas or environmental protection projects.
- Encouraging all activities to follow outdoor ethics — such as the ‘Leave No Trace’ initiative — to minimize environmental impact.
7. Tour Leaders, Local Representatives & Guides
We aim to maximize local employment in tourism and uphold a fair and safe working environment. We commit to:
- Preferring local tour leaders, guides, porters, drivers, cooks, and other local staff, provided they meet legal working age requirements and demonstrate equal ability.
- Hiring local guides from the community being visited to accompany groups and enrich the visitor experience.
- Ensuring guides hold the relevant qualifications and expertise required by local regulations.
- Informing guides on expected professional behavior towards customers, and investigating any claims of misconduct, applying disciplinary procedures when necessary.
- Paying all contracted local staff at least a living wage equal to or above the legal minimum or industry standard, and maintaining records of their credentials.
- Directing tour leaders and guides to brief clients on sustainability matters, social norms, and human rights topics relevant to the destination.
8. Destination
We aim to maximize positive and minimize negative impacts at every destination where we operate. We commit to:
- Supporting biodiversity conservation, including protected areas and high-biodiversity zones, by integrating them into our product offerings.
- Prioritizing new destinations that are reachable by more sustainable transport modes.
- Educating customers on cultural awareness — going beyond tolerance to promote active participation, empathy, and a reduction of cultural preconceptions.
- Not promoting Forbidden souvenirs include authentic archaeological artifacts, items made from protected flora/fauna (CITES list), and non-commercial mud/salt from the Dead Sea. Prohibited items also include drugs, pornography, weapons (knives, swords), and religious literature deemed inappropriate. Exporting antiquities older than 1700 is illegal.(except where permitted by law).
Forbidden & Restricted Items List – Jordan
- Antiquities and Artifacts: It is strictly illegal to remove items of significant archaeological or historical value, especially those dating back to 1700 or earlier.
- Dead Sea Products: You cannot harvest your own salt or mud from the Dead Sea. Only commercially packaged products are allowed for export.
- Flora and Fauna: Items containing threatened plant or animal species (as per CITES treaty and IUCN Red List) are forbidden. This includes corals and certain shells.
- Weapons and Sharp Objects: Firearms, explosives, swords, large knives, or replicas of these items are prohibited in luggage.
- Controlled Materials: Pornographic materials, certain religious literature, and items deemed contrary to cultural or religious values are restricted.
- Chemicals & Specific Goods: Certain industrial chemicals, solvents, and hazardous materials.
- Drugs: All illegal drugs and unauthorized prescription medication.
9. Customer Communication & Protection
Customers’ welfare and access to accurate information are central to our service. We ensure clear communication and strong client protection.
Prior to Booking
- Ensure customer privacy is never compromised.
- Comply with relevant standards and voluntary codes of conduct in marketing and advertising; never over-promise.
- Make product and pricing information clear, complete, and accurate, including any sustainability claims.
- Provide destination information — including sustainability aspects — that is factually correct, balanced, and complete.
- Inform customers about sustainable alternatives for accommodation, excursions, and transport options where available.
After Booking & During Travel
- Provide information on the natural surroundings, local culture, and cultural heritage of the destination.
- Maintain a permanently available emergency contact person and telephone number.
- Advise clients on money matters: best practices for currency exchange, tipping, and bargaining.
- Train staff and maintain guidelines on handling emergency situations.
- Inform customers about legislation on purchasing, sale, import, and export of artefacts, and items containing threatened species, in the destination.
- Encourage customers to use local restaurants and shops where appropriate.
- Inform customers of sustainable in-destination transport options where feasible.
After Travel
- Systematically measure customer satisfaction and use results to improve services and products.
- Include sustainability as an integral component of customer satisfaction research.
- Maintain clear procedures for handling complaints and feedback, ensuring timely and appropriate responses.
10. Active Sub-Policies
10.1 Energy Management
Our company is committed to improving energy efficiency through responsible use of heating, cooling, lighting, equipment, and digital resources. All employees share responsibility for energy-saving practices.
Technical Equipment
- Priorities energy-efficient equipment during procurement (based on energy labels).
- Set all computers to standby mode after 20 minutes of inactivity.
- Turn off printers and non-essential equipment outside working hours.
- Use power strips with switches to fully disconnect devices when not in use.
- Enable energy-saving modes on all applicable equipment.
- Operate appliances such as coffee machines only when needed.
- Employees must switch off all equipment (e.g., monitors, printers) when leaving their workstation.
- Reduce unnecessary printing and favor electronic communication.
Heating, Cooling & Ventilation
- Educate employees on the efficient use of heating, cooling, and ventilation systems.
- Switch off HVAC systems outside working hours (nights, weekends, and holidays).
- Optimize temperature settings across different time periods using programmable thermostats.
- Ensure regular maintenance and optimization of all HVAC systems.
- Use natural ventilation where practical instead of air conditioning.
Lighting
- Maximize the use of natural daylight wherever possible.
- Replace conventional lighting with energy-efficient alternatives such as LED.
- Install timers, motion sensors, and daylight sensors to control lighting.
- Use dimmers where appropriate to reduce unnecessary brightness.
- Ensure lighting fixtures and covers do not reduce efficiency.
Awareness & Behavioral Change
- Place signage and reminders near equipment to encourage switching off.
- Conduct regular awareness sessions on energy-saving practices.
- Communicate the energy policy regularly through internal channels (intranet, email).
- Include energy-saving practices in employee onboarding program.
10.2 Pollution Reduction
This policy guides our company in minimizing environmental impact, preserving the natural beauty of Jordan, and contributing to a sustainable tourism industry.
- Waste Minimization: Reduce waste generation by minimizing single-use items and adopting reusable alternatives. Implement a waste separation and recycling program where feasible.
- Water Conservation: Promote water conservation among staff and tour participants. Encourage water-saving fixtures in the office. Provide water refilling stations on tours and avoid offering single-use plastic bottles.
- Energy Efficiency: Invest in energy-efficient technologies. Educate staff on energy-saving measures at the office. (See Energy Management sub-policy for details.)
- Transportation Emissions: Priorities low-emission transport options. Design tours to include more hiking and cycling.
- Chemical Management: Minimize use of harmful chemicals. Switch to eco-friendly and locally made alternatives as they become available and affordable. Ensure all chemicals are stored, handled, and disposed of in accordance with environmental regulations.
- Environmental Education: Educate staff, guides, and tour participants on pollution reduction and responsible environmental practices.
- Sustainable Purchasing: Source environmentally friendly products and materials. Priorities suppliers with sustainable and eco-friendly practices. (See Sustainability Purchasing sub-policy for details.)
10.3 Sustainability Purchasing
This policy guides responsible and eco-friendly purchasing decisions to minimize our environmental impact and support local communities in Jordan.
- Local & Sustainable Sourcing: Priorities local suppliers aligned with sustainable practices. Encourage environmentally friendly and ethical production methods.
- Resource Conservation: Choose resource-efficient products and services. Minimize waste by selecting products with minimal or eco-friendly packaging.
- Biodiversity Preservation: Priorities suppliers contributing to biodiversity preservation. Avoid items made from endangered species or sourced from ecologically sensitive areas.
- Energy Efficiency: Prefer energy-efficient products and services. Consider lifecycle energy footprints.
- Social Responsibility: Support suppliers with fair labor practices and safe working conditions. Ensure products contribute positively to local communities.
- Certifications & Eco-labels: Priorities suppliers with recognized certifications such as Green Key. Verify alignment with international and local sustainability standards.
- Waste Reduction: Choose products with recyclable, biodegradable, or recycled packaging. Implement waste reduction strategies and encourage suppliers to do the same.
- Buying in Bulk: Purchase frequently used items in bulk. Seek reusable alternatives to reduce consumption of non-reusable materials.
- Continuous Improvement: Regularly review supplier sustainability performance. Seek staff and customer feedback to identify improvement opportunities.
10.4 Sustainable Accommodations
This policy outlines our commitment to promoting sustainability among accommodation partners in Jordan, encouraging continuous improvement and flexibility aligned with our sustainability goals.

- Cultural Respect & Preservation: Support accommodations that preserving local cultures, traditions, and heritage. Prefer properties that incorporate local art, architecture, or cultural heritage while respecting intellectual property rights.
- Education & Training: Promote sustainability training programs for accommodation staff. Share best practices and resources to support improvement.
Flexibility & Continuous Improvement
- Provide guidance and support to accommodations seeking sustainability certification.
- Collaborate with accommodations to develop customizable sustainability plans suited to their circumstances.
- Establish flexible criteria that accommodate properties at various stages of their sustainability journey.

10.5 Waste Reduction & Recycling
Experience Jordan Adventures is committed to minimizing our environmental impact and promoting responsible tourism. We implement the following waste management guidelines:
- Education & Awareness: Incorporate waste reduction practices into pre-trip briefings. Provide information on local recycling facilities and guidelines where available.
- Waste Minimization in Operations: Minimize single-use items and opt for reusable alternatives. Include reusable water bottles in the recommended packing list shared with participants.
- Waste Sorting & Recycling: Implement a clear waste sorting system at the office. Collaborate with local recycling facilities for responsible disposal of recyclable materials.
- Reducing Food & Packaging Waste: Work with suppliers to minimize excess packaging. Encourage responsible consumption to reduce food waste on tours. Provide water refilling stations on hiking and cycling trips.
- Continuous Improvement: Regularly review and update this policy to incorporate new technologies and best practices.
10.6 Water Conservation
Operating in water-scarce Jordan, we recognize the critical importance of responsible water management as part of our environmental sustainability commitment.
- Education & Awareness: Incorporate water conservation into pre-trip briefings, emphasizing regional water scarcity and responsible usage.
- Efficient Water Use in Operations: Regularly inspect and promptly repair any leaks or inefficiencies. Provide water refilling stations for guests wherever possible.
- Campsite Practices: Implement strict water conservation measures during camping — minimizing usage for cooking, cleaning, and personal hygiene. Use biodegradable and eco-friendly cleaning products.
- Promotion of Responsible Tourism: Encourage tour participants to be mindful of water usage throughout their adventure. Minimize single-use plastic water bottles and provide reusable alternatives and water purification solutions.
10.7 Staff Travel
This policy establishes guidelines for staff business travel to ensure it is safe, sustainable, and aligned with company objectives.
- Travel Authorization: All business travel must be approved in advance by management. International travel requires general manager approval with a low-impact travel plan.
- Travel Booking: All bookings (flights, hotels, transport) must be made through approved company channels, preferring vendors with sustainability measures who are in proximity to work locations.
- Transportation: Limit air travel as much as possible due to high carbon emissions. Encourage public transport or standard taxis/rideshare for ground travel. Align supplier inspection visits to reduce unnecessary transfers. Car rentals must be energy-efficient unless otherwise justified.
- Meals & Purchases: Staff are expected to choose local cuisine and beverages, and to purchase responsibly, when meals are not provided by the venue.
- Health, Safety & Insurance: Comply with all local laws and regulations while travelling. Ensure necessary vaccinations are up to date. Contact the designated company emergency contact immediately in an emergency. The company will provide travel insurance covering medical emergencies, accidents, and trip disruptions for all approved business travel.
- Personal Travel Extensions: Staff may extend business trips for personal reasons with prior approval. Any additional costs for personal travel must be borne by the staff member.
