Today we will enter Petra via ‘the Back Door,’ avoiding most of the crowds. We will hike a beautiful route up out of the desert valley that skirts around a sandstone mountain into a hidden high plateau and the back entrance to Petra.
Monastery
Your hike is rewarded as you approach the largest and best-preserved facade in all of Petra. Without the crowds of the main sites below, this site is great for photos!
Amphitheatre
View the impressive theatre, carved into the mountain about 2000 years ago, with a capacity of 4000 spectators.
Treasury
Awe at the most-well known facade in Petra, expertly carved into the side of the cliff and standing almost 40 meters tall.
Siq
Exit the Nabatean city through the magnificent tall slot-canyon main entrance to Petra known as the Siq.
Finish
From there, we will head to the Visitor’s Center, where today’s tour ends.

Wadi Farasa
Afterward, you will pass many sites including, the Renaissance Tomb, the Soldier Tomb, and then finishing at the Colonnaded Street in the Ancient Roman City in the heart of Petra.
Free Exploration
From the center of Petra, you will have free time to further explore the magical site on your own or head back to enjoy the cave bar or get some rest. You can head back down along the street of facades and the main trail, or for the adventurous, there are several good options to explore – including Jabal Khubtha, Um Bayyara, and more!
Overnight in Petra.
Shobak Castle
Start the day with a short transfer to Shobak Castle, the first of a series of Crusader Castles built in Jordan to control the region’s trade.
Cycle
From Shobak we start our ride on one of the most epic stages of the Jordan Bike Trail to Little Petra. Mostly on dirt tracks with a section of paved roads, this route leads us around the mountains of Dana and Petra with great views across the Jordan Valley. Lunch boxes will be provided on our way by a local family from Petra.
Little Petra
Close to the end of the ride enjoy a visit to Little Petra – an ancient suburb of Petra.
Bedouin Camp
We’ll stay at a Bedouin camp, hidden behind the region’s typical sandstone mushroom rocks, where you will get a first-hand impression of the traditional Bedouin hospitality.

Bedouin Camps:
Rooming on a twin-share basis. So travelers booking together will share a room.
These are fixed-site, touristic Bedouin Camps, staffed by locals, in Little Petra and Wadi Rum. Bathrooms are normally off-suite, with a women’s and men’s public bathroom. The tents do not have A/C or heater, but the desert normally has cooler temperatures at night.
The main airport (QAIA – Queen Alia International Airport) is approximately 1-hour outside of Amman.
Arrival:
Day 1 is scheduled just for your arrival and check-in.
Therefore any flight arriving on Day 1, with enough time to arrive, make it to the hotel, and get some sleep, is a good choice.
If you would like to arrive a day or so early, that’s great! You can easily book an add-on for one extra night on either end of your tour. Let us know and we can book extra nights and/or additional activities. Or feel free to arrange things on your own and join the group when it’s time.
Departure:
Day 8 is scheduled just for your check-out and departure to the airport.
Therefore a morning / mid-day departure flight on Day 8 is ideal.
It is possible to have a departure flight on day 7. If you chose to do so, we recommend a flight that departs at least after 7 pm.
Departing on Day 7 makes things a bit more rushed and tiring. But this option may work well for people with relatively short flights, less time off, or if the airfare available just happens to be a better deal that day.
We are operating these trips during the best times of year to trek in Jordan.
Throughout the year, at the camps during the night you will want to have long pants, and a light jacket or sweatshirt.
During November, December, and February, you may also want warmer clothes like a bigger jacket, hats, gloves, and a light rain jacket.
We know we are located in the Middle East, but don’t worry – Jordan is not that hot. We don’t offer many departures in the Summer for that reason, but May has the potential to be on the warmer side. During the warmest times this trip operates, the temperature is usually not much over 35 celsius (95 Fahrenheit).
This is a challenging trip. The two cycling days are the most difficult part of the trip. Both cycling rides are about 50 kilometers or 30 miles long on dirt jeep tracks. See more in the “ride stats” section of their itinerary descriptions.
Other than the two cycling days, the trip includes moderate difficulty hiking with a little bit of scrambling.
Shoes
The ideal shoe for this hike is light-weight hiking shoes.
If you only have big-clunky hiking boots and running/athletic shoes, you could take both and see what you prefer on the hike.
Hiking Sticks/Poles
The vast majority of people do not use hiking sticks for this tour.
However, if you like hiking with Hiking sticks/poles, or want them just in case, feel free to bring them.
Bikes:
Our bikes are Scott Aspect 740 bikes. They are light hardtail mountain bikes, which are well suited for this tour’s mix of both on-road and non-technical off-road riding.
Pedals & Seats
The bikes have standard flat pedals and standard seats. If you would like, you can bring your own bike seat and pedals (including SPD’s). We will be fit your bike equipment for you.
Helmet
A helmet will be provided for you. Again, if you would like to bring your own, please do.
Here are some things you are not allowed to bring to Jordan:
1- Drones
2- Binoculars
3- Walkie Talkies
4- Satellite Phones
This active journey offers a relatively low-carbon way to experience Jordan, with several parts of the trip completed on foot or by bicycle, helping reduce reliance on vehicle transfers.
The itinerary supports local guides, drivers, accommodation providers, Bedouin camp teams and other local suppliers in the communities visited. Meals use locally sourced ingredients wherever possible, while water-refilling stations are provided on most days to help reduce single-use plastic bottles.
Secure your spot with just a 25% deposit if you book more than 60 days before the tour. The remaining balance is due 45 days before the tour.
