Jordan to Host 5th Edition of Marathon des Sables in Wadi Rum – November 2025
Amman, July 29 – Jordan is proud to announce that it will once again host the Marathon des Sables—one of the world’s most famous desert endurance races—this coming November 1–8, 2025, in the breathtaking landscapes of Wadi Rum. This will be the fifth time the event takes place in Jordan, making the country the only destination in the Middle East to host this international race.
The announcement was made in Amman by Minister of Tourism Lina Annab and Cyril Gauthier, CEO of Marathon des Sables, during a press conference attended by officials, media, and partners.
This iconic desert race will bring together over 650 international runners, mostly from Europe, for a physically demanding and unforgettable experience. Organized in partnership with the Jordan Tourism Board and Experience Jordan Adventures, the event is expected to provide a substantial boost to tourism during the following seasons.
Minister Lina Annab highlighted that hosting this event is a significant step in Jordan’s journey to become a top destination for adventure tourism. Over the past decade, Jordan has invested in hiking trails, tourism infrastructure, and unique local experiences that connect visitors with its nature, culture, and heritage.
She also emphasized the value of “marathon tourism” as a growing global trend, attracting visitors who seek not just physical challenges, but meaningful and immersive experiences. The Wadi Rum course, known for its dramatic rock formations and red sand dunes, offers not only a tough race but also a chance for deep cultural and spiritual reflection.
In addition to the race, runners will have the chance to explore some of Jordan’s most famous attractions, including Petra—the ancient Nabatean city—and the healing waters of the Dead Sea.
Cyril Gauthier, CEO of Marathon des Sables, called the Jordan race the “jewel” of their global series, praising the region’s stunning landscapes, the warmth of the local communities, and the emotional connections built between runners and the country. He also shared their vision to expand further in Jordan, which he sees as an ideal place for combining sports, tourism, and culture.
Gauthier also thanked Experience Jordan Adventures for their ongoing efforts and outstanding work in organizing and supporting the race, saying their local expertise and dedication have been key to the marathon’s success in Jordan.
Ayman Abdel Karim, CEO of Experience Jordan Adventures, expressed pride in being the official local partner of the race. He noted the team’s dedication to sustainability and community involvement in Wadi Rum and thanked the Ministry of Tourism, the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), and the Jordan Tourism Board for their continued support.
This world-class event is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of endurance, connection, and discovery. It puts a global spotlight on Jordan’s natural wonders and strengthens its position as a leading destination for eco- and adventure tourism.
