Wadi Dana to Little Petra Trek – AMAZING!

Experience Jordan organized an absolutely amazing three-day trek from Wadi Dana to Little Petra.

First of all, they secured an excellent guide who knew the terrain like the back of his hand, and shared loads of useful and interesting information with us along the way. And second, I’ve never trekked with Bedouin support before, but now that I have, it’s going to be hard going back to carrying all of my own food, water, and camping gear. Since we only had to carry small daypacks with water and lunch, we were able to cover a lot more ground in a shorter period of time than we could have carrying everything on our own backs.

The Bedouin support crew met us in their 4×4 vehicles each night with our over-night gear, and best of all, with incredible hospitality: hot tea, and traditional, very generous meals all cooked over an open fire.

Everything went very smoothly, and there was a great deal of flexibility in the day-to-day planning. We would decide where we wanted to go the following day, and the support team would meet us there.

The scenery and the hiking itself was of course stunning and very satisfying. The trails are quite challenging, with much elevation gain and loss, and the variety of vegetation and geology during those days was jaw-dropping. Nearly every hour of the day we found ourselves in a completely different scene––walking through the flat desolate Arabah desert with jagged peaks to our left, and then ascending steeply up into them at Wadi Abu Sakakin, passing through tight valleys filled with juniper trees, then suddenly reaching the top with a 360 view of desert and peaks, descending into a valley of pastel colored sandstone, ice cold spring water, and passing through a long tunnel of bamboo type reeds to emerge alongside ancient Nabatean carved waterways. And that’s just half a day on this amazing trek!
